More than 400 volunteers from five Jefferson area churches gathered on Saturday, June 26th to work on two major community service projects. For this Season of Service they painted the Jefferson Middle School and district office, as well as beautified the landscaping at the elementary and middle schools. The two buildings were pressure washed by inmates from the Marion County correction facility in preparation for the painting. Mike Dedera, associate pastor of Jefferson Baptist Church, has led the vision of a community-wide project of significance. Virtually all the supplies have been purchased or donated by Jefferson business owners. The paint was valued at $4800, but the group was only charged $1700 by Freres Building Supply. Freres Lumber Company donated 80 yards of bark dust for landscaping. Jefferson Hometown Market provided 1200 hot dogs with all the fixings for the volunteers at a fraction of the retail price. The Jefferson Ministerial Association contributed a significant portion of the cost of t-shirts for each volunteer. Local contractor Jim Groome was the project coordinator.
